Our Readers should also take responsiblity for praying the Prayer of the Faithful each Sunday when we gather for Mass.
‘In the celebration of Mass the ways in which Christ is present in his Church gradually become clear. First he is present in the very assembly of the faithful, gathered together in his name; next he is present in his Word, when the Scriptures are read in the Church and explained; then in the person of the minister; and finally, in the Eucharistic sacrament.’
The Liturgy of the Word
From ‘The General Instruction of the Roman Missal’
“In the readings, God speaks to his people, opening up to them the mystery of redemption and salvation, and offering them spiritual nourishment: and Christ himself is present in the midst of the faithful through his word. By their silence and singing the people make God’s word their own, and they also affirm their adherence to it by means of the profession of Faith. Finally, having being nourished by it, they pour out their petitions in the Prayer of the Faithful for the needs of the entire Church and for the salvation of the whole world.
The reader is officially commissioned to read passages from scripture other than those taken from the Gospels. The reader may also announce the intentions in the Prayer of the Faithful, and if there is no psalmist, may recite the psalm between the readings.
So that the faithful may derive a keen appreciation of scripture by listening to the readings, it is necessary that those who read it to them, whether commissioned readers or not, should be competent for their task and carefully prepared for it.”

PRAYER OF A MINISTER OF THE WORD (In Preparation)
Lord, invest me with your power
as I prepare to proclaim the marvel of your message
I have prepared my reading,
I have tried to take within me
the meaning of what I am about to proclaim.
Help me to proclaim, not just with my lips,
but with my whole heart and soul.
Lord, make me a hollow reed
so that your voice will be heard by all who hear me.
Free me of excessive concern over my performance.
Convert my feeling of nervousness and
turn all my apprehension into an energy
for proclaiming your word with power and authority.
May your Spirit live in me and
fill the holy word that I proclaim.
